Stanford Lively Arts to bring Monk premiere

Joshua Kosman, Chronicle Music Critic
Friday, April 25, 2008

A world premiere commission by composer-choreographer Meredith Monk and new works by composers Roberto Sierra, Paul Dresher and John Adams are among the highlights of the 2008-09 season of Stanford Lively Arts.

The season, which runs from Oct. 5 to April 25, will also include centennial tributes to composer Olivier Messiaen and choreographer José Limón, as well as a 50th anniversary celebration of Miles Davis' classic recording "Kind of Blue."

The season opens with a program of music by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, performed by saxophonist Branford Marsalis and members of the Philarmonia Brasileira conducted by Gil Jardim. The schedule includes appearances by the Soweto Gospel Choir, the Emerson String Quartet and pianist Christopher Taylor.
